Snakehead Fishing in Thailand: What to Expect on Your Trip

Why Thailand?

Thailand is one of the best places in the world to target snakehead. The fish are big, the waters are productive, and the whole experience — early morning drives through the Thai countryside, mist sitting on the lake at sunrise, a snakehead exploding on a topwater lure — is genuinely unlike anywhere else.

Whether it is your first snakehead trip or you are a regular visitor, knowing what to expect makes the whole experience smoother and more enjoyable. Here is exactly how a typical trip is structured.

How a Typical Day Unfolds

Bangkok arrival and check-in

Most anglers fly into Suvarnabhumi or Don Mueang airport and stay in Bangkok a night or 2 before their fishing day. We recommend arriving at least the evening prior so you are rested and ready — early starts are part of the deal.

Get checked in, grab dinner, and get to bed early. You’re in for an early start.

We recommend staying somewhere central in the city or contact us for our recommendation that matches your budget that way we’ll know exactly where to meet you the morning we head off.

Early morning collection (3:00am – 4:00am)

This is where the trip begins. Collection from your Bangkok hotel happens between 3:00am and 4:00am depending on your destination for the day. It sounds brutal, but we need to get on the water early.

The drive out of Bangkok in the pre-dawn dark, coffee in hand, is part of the experience. Thailand wakes up early but the roads will still be quiet — it is one of the best times to see the country moving.

Breakfast on the way

Breakfast is sorted on the route to the fishing spot. Thai roadside food at that hour — rice soup (jok), noodles, or a 7/11 ham cheese toastie and fresh coffee — is cheap, delicious, and a genuine cultural experience in itself. On all-inclusive trips this is taken care of. On semi-guided trips, your guide will know exactly where to stop.

On the water by 6:00am

Arriving at the lake around 6:00am puts you on the water for the best fishing of the day. Early morning is when snakehead are most active — active and hungry, eagerly waiting for a meal to swim by, and before the heat of the day gets them lethargic and lazy to bite.

Expect mist on the water, bird life, and an experience with nature where cell phone signal may be difficult to find. Then your first cast goes out and the day begins.

Morning session

The morning session runs from roughly 6:00am through to midday or 1:00pm depending on the action. This is prime time. Topwater blind casting along the banks and into structure or actively pursuing fry balls and persistently casting to get a reaction bite. We’ll adjust techniques depending on the conditions and season.

Nothing beats patrolling a secluded waterway with overhanging trees, overgrown vegetation and an explosion from the water to break the silence when your lure lands in just the right spot.

Lunch break (12:00pm – 2:00pm)

The midday break is as much about the heat as the fish. The direct afternoon sun in the middle of a lake is serious — stepping off the water, eating a proper meal, having a rest and letting the day cool slightly before the afternoon push is the ideal opportunity to regroup, discuss tactics so you’re ready for the afternoon session.

On all-inclusive trips, lunch is arranged. On semi-guided, you’ll need to bring your own food.

Our favorite thing to do is find a quiet shaded spot, put out some picnic mats and setup a bbq or simply crack open your ready prepared meals. An afternoon nap also does great to re-energize after a long morning.

Afternoon session (until 5-6:00pm)

As the heat eases off, the fishing picks up again. The afternoon session runs until around 5-6:00pm — golden hour for snakehead, that have had all day to get hungry again.

This is often when the biggest fish of the day shows up.

End of day

Day trip: After the afternoon session wraps, it is back in the vehicle and into Bangkok. You will be back at your hotel by early evening — tired but filled with stories to tell and memories to carry for a lifetime!

Multi-day trip: If you are staying out for two or more days, you will overnight at accommodation near the lake rather than returning to Bangkok. Dinner, drinks and fishing tales, rest, and back on the water the following morning at 6:00am.

Two Ways to Book

All-Inclusive

Everything is taken care of. Hotel collection in Bangkok, transport to and from the lake, guide, boat, all fishing gear, meals, and non-alcoholic drinks throughout the day. If it is a multi-day trip, transport between locations and nearby accommodation is also included.

You show up, fish, and enjoy Thailand. We handle the rest.

Best for: First-time visitors, anglers who want a hassle-free experience, anyone unfamiliar with Thailand logistics.

Semi-Guided

Your boat and guide are covered. Getting to the agreed meeting point by the agreed time is your responsibility — everything else needs to be arranged in advance. We are happy to assist with transport, accommodation, and fishing gear hire before you travel, just get in touch and we will sort it out.

Best for: Experienced Thailand travellers, anglers with their own gear and transport preferences, those who want more flexibility in how they structure the trip.

What to Pack

Getting your kit right makes a significant difference to your comfort on the water. Thailand is hot, the sun is relentless, and you will be on a boat for the best part of ten hours.

Sun protection is not optional:

  • Wide-brim hat — the wider the better
  • UV vest or long-sleeved sun shirt
  • Long trousers on the boat — shorts leave your legs exposed all day
  • High SPF sunscreen, applied generously and more than once
  • Polarised sunglasses — essential for spotting fish in the shallows and protecting your eyes from glare all day

Footwear: Comfortable closed shoes. Flip flops on a fishing boat are a bad idea — wet, slippery decks, hooks, and a long day on your feet.

Fishing gear: If you have your own lures and tackle, bring them. Frog lures, topwater plugs, and your preferred braid are worth packing. If you do not have gear or are unsure what to bring, get in touch before your trip and we will make sure your guide has everything covered.
